Viet Hai Village was founded over 100 years ago by a group of Chinese fishermen who drifted ashore during a major storm. They accidentally discovered a freshwater source in the forest and decided to settle, naming the village Thai Lai.

After the border conflict in 1979, the Chinese settlers returned to the mainland, and the local Vietnamese took over. The government later renamed the village Viet Hai, meaning “Vietnamese living in the sea.”
