Thung Nham, Ninh Binh

Thung Nham Ecotourism Area
The Thung Nham Ecotourism Area is located approximately 12 kilometers west of Ninh Binh city (in Hai Nham village, Ninh Hai commune, Hoa Lu district), nestled in the core of the Trang An Scenic Landscape Complex, next to the Tam Coc – Bich Dong tourist area.

With an area of over 300 hectares, Thung Nham Ecotourism Area offers a variety of tourism experiences, including mountain climbing, orchard tours, wetland and primary forest explorations, visits to dry caves, and most notably, birdwatching in a garden teeming with diverse bird species.

The name “Thung Nham” originates from the local area where this tourist destination is situated, deeply reflecting the cultural and geographical identity of Ninh Binh in northern Vietnam. “Thung Nham” is derived from Sino-Vietnamese, where “Thung” refers to a valley surrounded by mountains, and “Nham” signifies towering cliffs and steep rocky faces. Together, “Thung Nham” translates to a valley encircled by steep cliffs, representing the harmonious blend of natural grandeur and poetic beauty.

Attractions in Thung Nham

Bird Garden

This is undoubtedly the most significant highlight of Thung Nham Ecotourism Area. The Bird Garden is home to numerous bird species, including herons, storks, teals, and black drongos. Notably, it is a sanctuary for two rare species listed in the Red Book: sarus cranes and pheasants.

Visitors can explore the Bird Garden on foot or by boat. Drifting along the tranquil waters, listening to the natural sounds, and soaking in the serene scenery brings a sense of peace and closeness to nature. Walking allows for deeper immersion, providing opportunities to connect with the forest, pristine sounds, and poetic landscapes of mossy trees and lush foliage.

At dusk, as flocks of birds return to their nests, the entire wetland area becomes alive with the beauty of nature, offering visitors a rare and enchanting experience.

Vai Gioi Cave

In ancient times, Vai Gioi Cave was where Hoa Lu’s residents prayed for favorable weather and bountiful harvests. It is considered a sacred place where heaven and earth converge in harmony. Today, it is regarded as a heavenly realm, embodying “hell, earth, and heaven” within the ancient capital.

To reach the cave, visitors must climb 439 stone steps. From the upper entrance, one can admire the panoramic view of Thung Nham’s majestic mountains and vibrant stilt houses, forming a breathtaking and dynamic natural painting.

Tip: Vai Gioi Cave is about 200 meters from Gate 1. You can visit other attractions first via Gate 2, then explore Vai Gioi Cave in the cool afternoon or early morning to save energy. Bring water and wear sports shoes. Visitors with heart or low blood pressure conditions are advised not to attempt the climb.

But Cave

But Cave is a 500-meter-long waterway cave, with its highest ceiling reaching 40 meters and its widest section spanning 30 meters. It connects Thung Nham with Thien Ha Cave, linking the Hoa Lu and Nho Quan districts.

Visitors to But Cave travel by boat along the emerald-green Ben Dang River. The cave is entirely natural, featuring a rich diversity of stalactites and stalagmites in various shapes, such as a Buddha, dragon scales, heavenly silk ribbons, fairies, peaches, coral reefs, whales, and more.

Tien Ca Cave (Mermaid Cave)

To explore this cave, visitors walk along a winding bridge inside the mountain. Tien Ca Cave is considered one of the most stunning waterway caves in Thung Nham. Inside, visitors feel as if they are stepping into an underwater world, with glistening stalactites and constantly dripping water.

Under dim lighting, the intricate stalactite formations appear in a variety of shapes and colors, adding a mystical, fairy-tale quality to the cave. Over millions of years, nature has sculpted the formations into structures resembling a sleeping mermaid amidst Thung Nham’s wilderness.

In some sections, the stalactites are so massive that visitors must bend or squeeze through narrow paths to continue. Elderly individuals, young children, or those with back pain are advised to skip this attraction and explore others instead.
